Devon Woods and Farrantshayes Wetland Creation

24/07/202508:30–16:00
Farrantshayes

Join our South West England Member Network for their annual summer event focused on the vital topic of integrating water into both new and existing woodlands. This theme is especially timely, following the driest spring in 69 years.

Conservation Manager Nick Millman’s discovery of 'ghost streams' at Farrantshayes in Devon sparked a transformative response across the estate. Partnering with The Wildlife Trust and North Devon Biosphere, Nick led efforts to restore these hidden watercourses. The project led to the creation of a new wetland that enhances water quality, slows water flow, and introduces natural flood management. This was complemented by a 30-hectare multifunctional woodland scheme, which includes productive sweet chestnut coppice, agroforestry planting for silage, riparian and wet woodland, and areas left for natural colonisation.

The morning session will feature Chris Waterfield, Carbon & Water Advisor at the Forestry Commission, who will explore how to manage water in woodlands in line with the fifth edition of the UKFS. He will also share insights into the development of the Woodland Water Code and what practitioners can expect from future water credit initiatives.

Claire Burke, Head of Applied Sciences at Zulu Ecosystems, will also speak at the event. Representing the tech-enabled nature restoration company, Claire will present a recent Severn Trent Water catchment case study that used hydrological modelling to strategically target woodland creation and peatland restoration to reduce flood risk for downstream communities, manage drought, improve water quality and enhance biodiversity.

The day will include indoor presentations followed by an afternoon site visit to Farrantshayes. With a range of case studies on integrating water into woodlands, this event is an invaluable opportunity for practitioners looking to expand their knowledge and apply innovative water management strategies in their work.
