Join us for this event in October that will explore various topics related to preparing for a chemical free future.
Considering the likely decline in the availability of chemicals, this event will look at what alternative options are available, what we can learn from the agricultural sector and look at some cutting edge research being undertaken by the University of Wales on Hylobius abietis control.
Colin Palmer, Confor's chemical advisor, will look at the history of insecticides for H. abietis, covering the characteristics of CTPR and how to use it with minimal environmental impact, the regulatory system and the withdrawal of insecticides and the added commercial overtones for minor uses.
Professor Tariq Butt from Swansea University has been carrying out research on organic methods to control H. abietis using repellants and attractors which had some interesting and beneficial side effects on the tree establishment.
Jo Oborn from FWAG will share views from the agricultural sector and how they are dealing with these changes.
Ben Raskin, Head of Agroforestry at the Soil Association, will give a presentation on establishing and managing trees without herbicide, with practical insight and the latest research on a range of chemical-free weed control approaches, including mulches, mechanical, and flame/electrical techniques. Ben will showcase some of the innovation from farming and agroforestry that could be applied in a forestry setting.
This event has been developed by the Institute's South West England Member Network (SWEMN) and the SWEMN AGM will take place during the event.
